How to Apply

Priority Dates for Completing Financial Aid Applications

  • Summer Semester 2018: April 9, 2018
  • Fall Semester 2017: July 9. 2018

The first step to apply for federal and state financial aid is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Financial Aid professionals are available to assist applicants in completing the FAFSA.

The FAFSA is located online at Due to processing times for financial aid, applicants should apply four (4) to six (6) weeks before the anticipated enrollment term. Grant programs operate on an award year basis beginning July 1 and ending June 30.

Students must apply or reapply each year in order receive or continue receiving financial aid. The FAFSA is available online effective October 1 of each year. The FAFSA uses income information from two years back. For example, the 2017-2018 FAFSA uses 2015 taxed and untaxed income.

The Wiregrass Georgia School Code is 005256.

Students and/or parents who are tax filers are encouraged to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) available in the FAFSA to download their tax information from the IRS into the FAFSA. The DRT is the preferred method for entering tax data; and use of the DRT greatly decreases processing time during the Verification Process by the Financial Aid Office for applicants selected by the Department of Education.

FAFSA applications are processed by the federal Central Processing Services (CPS). The results are sent to the applicant through an online Student Aid Report (SAR) or by mail; as well as, sent electronically to the college(s) whose school code is on the FAFA. The CPS matches student records with federal databases such as the Social Security Administration, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Applicants who enter a valid e-mail address on the FAFSA will receive an e-mail notification when CPS has processed the application to the college via the colleges records process.

The college downloads FAFSAs electronically into our Banner system on a bi-weekly basis. Applicants who are chosen for the Verification Process are notified by letter or e-mail of the documents required to complete verification. Applicants chosen for the Verification Process should submit all required documents within two weeks of notification to avoid delays in receiving a determination of their financial aid package.

Applicants who are unable to or who do not wish to complete the FAFSA may apply for state financial aid by completing the Georgia Student Financial Aid Application (GSFAPP) online at The FAFSA is required for students applying for the Student Access Loan (SAL) administered through the Georgia Student Finance Authority (GSFA). Unlike the GSFAPP, the FAFSA considers federal and state financial aid opportunities for students. The FAFSA is the preferred application for applicants attending Wiregrass Georgia Technical College.
