Apprenticeships

For Students

Apprenticeship is a method of training individuals in a trade using a combination of on-the-job skills development and classroom/lab related instruction.

If you enjoy exploring the latest technology used in the field, working with your hands, and earning while you learn, an apprenticeship may be a great opportunity for you!

In an apprenticeship, you earn a salary from day one with guaranteed raises over time as you learn new skills.

There are nine programs at Wiregrass that are approved for the apprenticeship program:

  • Accounting
  • Automotive Technology
  • CNC Specialist
  • Computer Information Systems
  • Diesel Truck Maintenance
  • Industrial Systems Technology
  • Machine Tool Technology
  • Telecommunications
  • Welding and Joining Technology

And more programs are being approved all the time!

For Employers

Apprenticeship is a proven solution for businesses to recruit, train, and retain highly skilled workers.

  • Highly-skilled employees
  • Reduced turnover costs
  • Higher productivity
  • More diverse workforce

Apprentice, Shentina Strange working on a vehicle

Shentina Strange, an Automotive Technology program student from the Valdosta Campus, is now getting the work experience at Valdosta Toyota. Toby Heard, Wiregrass Automotive Instructor shared this about Shentina, “Shentina started the automotive diploma with a great attitude and willingness to learn. Her good work ethics led to a career at the local Toyota dealership through the apprenticeship program.”

-- Toby Heard, Automotive Instructor, Wiregrass

“We are very pleased with our apprentice. There is a serious lack of talent out there for this kind of job. These guys who are willing to come out of high school and enter a high demand program like this can eventually make more money than those in a management position!”

-- Jimmy Kitchens, American Truck Parts

“We have seen great results from the apprenticeship program with Wiregrass, and look forward to participating in the future!”

-- Kurt Deen, General Manager, Midway Truck, Inc.
